MASQUERADE

MASQUERADE

Music Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen

Co-directors Sam Strong & Lee Lewis

In a wondrous world of riddles and hidden treasure, bumbling Jack Hare is on a race against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun.

Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother cheers her son Joe with the tale of Jack Hare’s adventure.

But when Jack’s mission goes topsy–turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the rescue, and the line between the two worlds becomes blurred forever. Bringing to life Kit Williams’ iconic picture book, Masquerade features the multi–talented Helen Dallimore, a talking fish and a gassy pig, with songs and music performed live on stage by Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen.

Cool show, reminded me of the book but far more entertaining.

I took my son to this. We loved it. It was magical and beautiful. It was not the usual stuff for kids that can be boring for adults. I liked that it had a great balance of magic and not patronising kids. Go see it if it comes along again!

well produced and entertaining

Great costume designs. The tone of the show seemed to try to mix acting styles for both young audiences and appeal to the adults in the crowd at the same time, but was a bit uneven.

Not knowing the book or the backgound to the amulet, the play was a delight. We went without any children and loved it. Hopefully it tours to other centres for more people to enjoy.

Went with the big family, age from 62 to 7 years old. Everyone loved it!!!!

Great fun, though should really have only been one act long.
The first half could do with some editing, the second half really stepped things up and provided an enjoyable experience.
Not suitable for really young children, but a fun adventure for primary school aged students.

kayleneo

Enjoyed it - definitely for older kids than younger given the subject matter

A very memorable night out!

Fabulous show. Although the talent was clear across the entire cast, stand-out Jack the Hare was a winner. Enough fun and humor for all ages. We didn't take kids and had an absolute blast!

In giving permission for Kate Mulvany to adapt his book to the stage Kit Williams had as a condition that it be for "nine to ninety year olds". Job done. Well staged with an excellent cast and the inspired use of Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen both as cast and musicians. Nathan O'Keefe as Jack Hare gave as energetic and mesmerizing a performance as you could ask for and Helen Dallimore as Tessa was a show stopper when unleashing her vocal talent. Something for everyone but for young ones familiar with the book an outstanding introduction to live theatre and musical performance. A cut above a pantomime.

This was wonderful and exceeded all my expectations. I'm so glad I didn't miss seeing it which is highly likely as I wouldn't usually go to anything advertised as a children's show. It was a wonderful evening's entertainment.

Gopal

Fantastic. A packed theatre. Enjoyed the music, the acting and the script.

miss pammy

how fortunate were we tonight to see this performance of Masquerade! Great that it is on again because I will be telling people to see it. A HUGE THANK YOU!

mikushkavliea

We were totally mesmerised by tonight's performance of Masquerade ‪(Melbourne Festival)‬ .Don't be fooled into thinking this is a play just for children - definitely not! The child will perceive Masquerade through their lens and watch a beautiful fairy tale unfold.

The adult will see Masquerade for much more than just a fairytale. Masquerade is an example of a script, a performance that speaks to people of all ages - that is what makes this event so unforgettable and outstanding. There is something reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland in this play - another great story for children and adults alike.

This was an outstanding script, set, acting - I feel privileged to have seen this show with my grand daughter.

What a magical production! We were really excited to go to the theatre and we didn't get disappointed. The set up of the stage was simple, but worked great. It was always possible to see something different light up in the frame around the stage, but it still didn't interrupt the play. I enjoyed to see the live band and that they were not "just a band". They were involved in the performance.
The dialoges were short and funny- definitely not just for kids. Nathan O'Keefe was the best choice for the role as Jack Hare. You just could't keep your eyes of him. With his movements, his mimic and jokes (some especially for the Melbourne Audience - like a Werribee Zoo joke) he played his way right in our heart.
Some of the songs found their way right in our brains and we kept and humming them all the way home.
It was also nice to see Kate Mulvany (which we knew from the movie "The little Death") afterwards and were able to have a little chat to her. A great night and we definitely will recommend Masquerade to our family and friends.

lamicena

Nice, nice, nice.
A fairytale for kids and adult.

Trisha

Funny, entertaining, great acting. Would highly recommend

elvis

The lighting, set design and costumes were spot on. And the music set the various moods, and was very good, with about 3 0r 4 songs that really stood out. And the acting of the young boy (aged about 9 years) was convincing.

BUTT the caution is that this is basically a sophisticated kids pantomime, and not to everyone's taste. The 2nd half seemed to flow better, but I can only give it 3 stars....recommended, but with a caution. But great theatre, and pre-show dining at "The Script" cafe, right next door worked well.

Thank-you Irena, for a chance to see this show.
