This is England Screening

Based on the experiences of writer/director Shane Meadows (Twenty Four Seven) THIS IS ENGLAND is the powerful story of a troubled boy growing up in 1983 working class England. Combining humour and violence, Meadows expertly directs newcomer 14 year old Thomas Turgoose in the role of Shaun, where he brilliantly depicts how a lonely, fatherless boy gets sucked in to the skinhead movement. This coming of age film examines skinhead culture and racism In Thatcher’s council estate England, demonstrating that despite the dangerous undertones of gangs, they can be a place of comfort.

During the summertime school holidays, Shaun finds fresh male role models when those in the local skinhead scene take him in. With his new friends Shaun discovers a world of parties, first love and the joys if Dr Martin boots. Here he meets Combo (Stephen Graham), an older, racist skinhead who has recently got out of prison. As Combo’s gang harass the local ethnic minorities, the course is set for a rite of passage that will hurl Shaun from innocence to experience.

“an electric, stunning and powerful movie, crammed with extraordinary performances. This is The Best British Film Of The Year.” – Total Film
