The 2018 Spanish Film Festival (SFF) will screen nationally from 17 April exclusively at Palace Cinemas. These five highlights will form part of the curated program of films and events that will celebrate the culture, life and cinema of Spain.
Other highlights include the Australian premieres of:
MIST & THE MAIDEN (La niebla y la doncella). Adapted from Lorenzo Silva’s best-selling novel, this gripping mystery follows a cold case investigation on the Spanish Canary Islands. Straight from its official selection at the Málaga Film Festival, the film stars a role call of Spanish favourites Verónica Echegui (Let Yourself Go! LIFF17 and You’re Killing Me Susana CineLatino17), Quim Gutiérrez (Three Many Weddings SFF2014), Aura Garrido (Stockholm SFF14), Roberto Álamo (May God Save Us SFF17) and Marian Álvarez (Wounded 2013).
From the maverick director of the Spanish Academy Award (Goya) winning Blancanieves (Snow White 2012) comes madcap comedy ABRACADABRA. As visually sumptuous as it is entertaining, a housewife’s husband Almodóvar–esque comedy from Pablo Berger starring Maribel Verdú (SFF guest 2013)
Goya nominee Marc Clotet (The Sleeping Voice 2011) and Melina Matthews (The Returned 2013) star in period drama THE CHESS PLAYER (El jugador de ajedrez), Luis Oliveros’s second feature, which follows a chess master who is falsely accused of being a spy and sent to an SS prison.
And DYING (Morir) from breakout director Fernando Franco – a follow-up to his Goya Award winning debut Wounded. This evocative drama stars Marian Álvarez as Marta, a vivacious woman understandably pushed to the edge of her emotional limits when her partner is diagnosed with a brain tumour.
This is just a taste of the full 2018 Spanish Film Festival menu. The full program will be announced in late March.
