ANTIGONE

ANTIGONE

Anouilh’s ANTIGONE is a powerful reinterpretation of Sophocles’ tragedy questioning our ethics and notions of power, politics and individual liberties.

Starring the striking Ellen Williams as Antigone and NIDA graduate Neil Modra as King Creon, we follow the rebellion of the “little sparrow” against the pragmatic king, as Antigone is determined to bury her brother despite the royal ban.

This ANTIGONE is a unique piece of theatre, oscillating between farce and tragedy, between the modernity of its language, set and costumes and the classicism of its structure, personified by a Greek Chorus echoing key ideas of the play in the original French.

“I want everything of life and I want it now! I want it total, complete; otherwise I reject it!”

A well done performance with good use of the French girls chorus.

This is a well located venue close to public transport and the multicultural shopping of Erskinville and Newtown. The staff make you very welcome. It's a relaxed but intimate atmosphere where the audience is close to the action. With timeless themes, witty dialogue, convincing acting and stylish direction. Anna Jahjah's direction of Shalvey's translation of Anouilh's reinterpretation of Sophocles' ANTIGONE (that is a mouthful) is well worth seeing.

Sophocles' Antigone artfully depicted by a cast of very talented performers. Antigone who questions the power, politics and just about everything say 'No' to all, tragedy written in the BC involving teenager still relateable in today's time.

Hour and a half play for most part was captivating, engaging and dynamic definitely a must watch play.
