PERTH CONCERT HALL
Friday 8 & Saturday 9 August at 7.30pm
Conductor: Asher Fisch
Piano: Steven Lin
The West Australian Symphony Orchestra’s Classics Series goes from strength to strength in 2014 with Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser, Asher Fisch, presenting two of the giants of the Romantic era: (Austrian-born) Franz Schubert and (German composer) Robert Schumann.
The program commences with Symphony in B minor (unfinished) by Schubert. Although the composer’s early death meant that this masterwork was never fully completed, it nonetheless continues to provide a compelling symphonic experience.
The first half of the program concludes with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Taiwanese-American pianist Steven Lin. This titanic work provides a challenging, virtuosic vehicle for pianistic display and is ideally suited to showcase the talents of this prodigiously-gifted young musician.
Steven Lin’s artistry was evident from an early age. He was accepted into the Juilliard Pre-College Division on a full scholarship at the age of ten. Since graduating from Juilliard, he has developed an enviable reputation as an engaging and imaginative musician.
“His playing was …. immaculately voiced and enhanced by admirable subtleties of shading and dynamics.” - The New York Times
Steven was a prize-winner at the 2014 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, held in Tel Aviv in May.
In the second half of the program, WASO will perform Symphony No. 3 “Rhenish” by Schumann. Inspired by the magnificent Rhine River and his impressions of Cologne’s grand cathedral, this powerfully sweeping and majestic symphony remains a favourite with audiences worldwide.
Great performance although not so much my style of music. Mum absolutely loved it.
