SUITCASE IN TOW, FRED (STANLEY TUCCI) ARRIVES AT THE DOORSTEP OF HIS BEAUTIFUL MISTRESS, VELVET (ALICE EVE) AFTER FOUR YEARS APART, CLAIMING TO HAVE FINALLY LEFT HIS WIFE. BUT WHEN SHE REJECTS HIS ATTEMPTS TO REKINDLE THEIR ROMANCE, HIS PERSISTENCE EVOLVES INTO OBSESSION – AND A DARK HISTORY BETWEEN THE FORMER LOVERS COMES INTO FOCUS.
An impressively sustained two-hander with Stanley Tucci as the manic, ego-crushed older man and Alice Eve as the dazzling ingénue. Their nuanced performances, paired with LaBute’s dialogue, create an intriguing drama with a stunning finale. A true return to form for writer/director Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, Possession), Some Velvet Morning is an astutely written portrait of a very modern romance.
“I wanted to make a film that feels like an argument that the audience has walked in on by mistake. Passionate and funny and intense. Scary at times... This is cinema at its most immediate and demanding but filled with two of our best actors battling it out in a sexy, dark, hilarious look at the hidden world of our deepest fantasies.”
