SOME VELVET MORNING

SOME VELVET MORNING

SUITCASE IN TOW, FRED (STANLEY TUCCI) ARRIVES AT THE DOORSTEP OF HIS BEAUTIFUL MISTRESS, VELVET (ALICE EVE) AFTER FOUR YEARS APART, CLAIMING TO HAVE FINALLY LEFT HIS WIFE. BUT WHEN SHE REJECTS HIS ATTEMPTS TO REKINDLE THEIR ROMANCE, HIS PERSISTENCE EVOLVES INTO OBSESSION – AND A DARK HISTORY BETWEEN THE FORMER LOVERS COMES INTO FOCUS.

An impressively sustained two-hander with Stanley Tucci as the manic, ego-crushed older man and Alice Eve as the dazzling ingénue. Their nuanced performances, paired with LaBute’s dialogue, create an intriguing drama with a stunning finale. A true return to form for writer/director Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, Possession), Some Velvet Morning is an astutely written portrait of a very modern romance.
“I wanted to make a film that feels like an argument that the audience has walked in on by mistake. Passionate and funny and intense. Scary at times... This is cinema at its most immediate and demanding but filled with two of our best actors battling it out in a sexy, dark, hilarious look at the hidden world of our deepest fantasies.”
NEIL LaBUTE

Strong performances from leads. disturbing and intense. not sure if the end pay off is enough to classify it as great film. Not something that can be enjoyed again.

curros

Good movie but did not feel involved.

Demon

Divisive film for audience. Certainly the cause of some seat squirming.Did not see the final twist coming. Brought a collective smile and forehead slapping to the audience that made it to the end. Great film when you finally understand what it was all about.

hayesy

quite intense and riveting to watch. Enjoyable film and would recommend.

Danni81

Interesting film. Not what I expected. Very intense

Garry_mann

Intense and worth waiting till the end

dreddie

Unexpected twist which left us talking. Overall an enjoyable movie but understand it might not appeal to many given the focus of the film

Melbourne1954

Intense viewing with an unexpected ending but well played.

Alexia

Pretty full on

Fanny30

Too misogynistic
Put me in an uncomfortable position as a woman!

Bonnie

Convincingly frustrating to the point that we had to wait for the twist which was unforeseen.

Galapagos

Hard to stay focussed on this not very interesting film.

limefroggy

Horrendous film! Do not recommend! It is misogynistic in the extreme.

Lidija

Definitely worth sticking through to the end. Great movie.

Interesting story line that provokes a lot of thought

Not my cup of tea

The film made me feel quite uncomfortable throughout. Glad I stayed until the end for the twist. Have never seen so many people leave before the end of a film, including the friend I went with

No I didn't like it so much - at times it intrigued me but the characters were excruciating, so I didn't make it till the end. Glad to read that many others enjoyed it - something for everyone!

I want sure about this film felt very uncomfortable. Eleven people walked out, I think its a bit to the violence towards women, I did stay to end. I would recommend this film. even though the ending sort of justified the story line.

Didn't expect to enjoy this film based on Jason/Judith's At The Movies review, but was curious because I love Stanley Tucci's acting.
Took a little time to get used to the long scene takes; then found I was riveted & eager to see what would happen next.
Amazing performances from both actors.
Not your escapist/entertainment/mainstream cinema-goer type film. It's in your face & cleverly draws attention to an increasingly popular taboo fantasy & relationship behavior that will surely shock or disgust some audiences.

Clearly there were Mixed emotions throughout the cinema attendees towards the film, but twist towards end made it a good film in my opinion...

LeonieD

Found this very compelling - last 5 minutes of the film had my reassessing every thought up to that point.

wfpotter

For most of this film I felt extremely uncomfortable - something just didn't sit right. The twist at the end almost redeemed the film - but I still came away from the film feeling uncomfortable. It did stick in my mind - so I guess that is a good thing.

Lili

This is a very clever film that twists and turns throughout. The acting is superb!

This movie was horrible. The main male actor Stanley Tucci who has been great in other films like Devil Wears Prada was terribly unconvincing in this role. I thought he was horrible and annoying. This is a film that didn't flow with stops and starts everywhere. As a result I walked out which I rarely ever do.
My friend had the same opinion. If you're going to make a film, do it right!

This was a challenging film but it was worth it. I feel that a number of people that were at this screening were not your typical art house cinema patrons so the reviews are not consistent with the target audience for this film.

sleepy

I found it a bit tedious. I did stay till the end for the twist but I noticed a few people walked out during movie.

Bekaboo

Good acting but slow movie and quite unsettling even with the twist at the end. Not my kind of film I'm afraid.

suzip

This film is too much. Too much unnecessary bad language, too many words and too self indulgent. I wanted to leave after 20 minutes but unfortunately stayed to the end for the violent twist.

HellyB

Both actors gave an excellent performance and it was interesting to see the shift of power as each took turns in getting angry with the other. I loved Velvet's home and furnishings and did not anticipate the final ending which was quite a surprise.

GeoffH

I loved this film. Superb acting and directing. Great twist at the end. Would make a great play.

Zeus

I didn't enjoy this film. The language and rape scene were upsetting. Its not my type of film. A number of people left the cinema and had my friend wanted to leave I would have.

Josephine

I was warned by my friend about the Margaret/David review, but normally that doesn't deter me. Coming from a theatre background, I felt like I was watching some strange version of 'Waiting for Godot', and frankly neither of us made it past the kitchen scene and left the cinema. I might watch it at home at a later date. I have little patience I'm sorry. This is the second time in my life I have walked out on a movie.

Intense, great acting. A play in movie form. Love the end!

Unfortunately, I can't say that I enjoyed this film. I did enjoy the twist at the end however.

trishl

Very intense film, with strong character performances. Not my kind of film, but glad I stayed until the end, to get the twist.

Hopeful123

Tha movie is horrific. Promotion of violence against women is not entertainment. A number of people got up and left the cinema. I kept hoping that it would improve- it didnt

peeweekathi

Really good film, gripping viewing at times and fantastic performances by both stars! Some people walked out, not really sure why, but might have been because of the convincing performances! Stick around and be surprised!

sf

Harrowing. Unfortunately Misogyny and rape are still represented in films today as entertainment. The twist at the end almost salvages the film, together with the calibre of the acting.
