Words or pictures – which side are you on? Choose your weapon – the pen or the brush.

We have an advance screening session this Thursday followed by a Q&A with the director, Fred Schepisi.

A must-see romantic comedy, starring Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee, Clive Owen (Closer) and Academy Award winner, Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) from one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Fred Schepisi (The Devil’s Playground, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Last Orders, The Eye of the Storm).

“This is a romance that is a little different, to say the least,” says Schepisi. “In a film like WORDS AND PICTURES, it’s important that your main characters have chemistry and boy, these two really do. It’s a chemistry that crackles.”

The setting is an elite, New England prep school where Jack (Clive Owen), having shown great promise as an author and poet, is now an English teacher who lives and breathes his love of language. His secret (not the only one!) is that he can’t actually write anymore - he’s lost his mojo.

Enter Dina (Juliette Binoche), the new Art teacher; an acclaimed and passionate artist who is fighting the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis. Her physical abilities are increasingly impaired and the disease is literally taking the brush out of her hand.

Dina’s reputation has preceded her, known at her last school as ‘The Icicle,’ she can be a little frosty, to say the least. But when the two meet, a spark ignites in Jack and he is relentless in his attempt to melt her façade. At every opportunity, he tries to engage her in his perpetual word game.

When Jack learns that Dina has told the students that words are ‘traps’ and ‘lies’, that art is the only bearer of truth, he is quick to the defense. The gauntlet for a school-wide competition of words versus pictures is thrown down, and students and faculty take sides.

It didn't come to our local cinema and I didn't get to see it. Sorry! Hard to rate if I didn't see it - shouldn't there be an option to cover this?

We enjoyed it. Interesting interpretation of a familiar theme. Not really a great fan of the two leads but it held my interest all the way through. Led to lively discussion with my friend after the film, so not one you immediately forget about as soon as you leave the cinema.

Good film, but a little slow moving...

Are words enough? Or should I add pictures? I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this witty comedy.

A heart warming and inspirational movie. The story line reminded me of Dead Poets Society and rekindled affection for teachers who inspire thoughts and ideas. The acting was fabulous as can be expected from Binoche and Owen (a bit disappointed with the final scene - the laughter seemed forced). Overall a really good movie.

duncan

A lovely film. The scenario has been covered before, but this one is well done.

Words and Pictures is a romantic comedy that is both clever and witty and leaves you with plenty to think about. Loved the cast too, Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen are 2 of my favourites. Fred Schepesi has done a brilliant job with this one and the beautiful music composed by Paul Grabowski also deserves a mention. This is a must see. Leonie

absolutely intriguing from the beginning ..great mix of dry humour, word monopoly a kaleidoscopic array many wonderful conversations ..definitely want to see it again & tell all to go see - an honour to listen to Q &A with Fred Schepisi

Josephine

Amazing! Rocked up to first screening in Australia at the Rivoli, and there was Geoffrey Rush, Paul Grawbowski and Fred Schepsi. Had front row seats, and Fred Schepsi invited us to find a better seat - so we did - middle of the middle row....right behind Geoffrey Rush. Great movie - nice to hear some intelligent and thought provoking dialogue, literary and artistic references and of course wonderful actors. More of this I say!

erezy

An amazing film and Q&A evening with Fred Schepisi. Words and Pictures is a great romantic comedy without a dull moment.

Mamajo

An absolutel must watch movie!! Thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A session at the end as well.

Billysnooks

What a treat! 2 hours of total entertainment followed by an hour of Q&A enlightenment with Fred Schepisi sharing life behind the scenes. It's a story of a deeply flawed poet and a physically broken painter who draw us into their lives so easily. This movie joins 'Russia House' and 'Roxanne' to go down as fabulous Fred Schepisi films. I can't wait to see it again! I would have rated it 8 out of 5 if I could.
