Charlie's Country

Charlie's Country

“Compelling and enthralling. A powerful journey. It is impossible to take your eyes off David Gulpilil.”
ABC Radio

“A delicate but powerful film that functions as both a stinging depiction of marginalisation and as a salute to the career of the remarkable actor who inhabits almost every frame.”
Hollywood Reporter

Synopsis:
Renowned director Rolf de Heer and screen legend David Gulpilil deliver an Australian cinematic masterpiece with Charlie’s Country, their third film collaboration following Ten Canoes and The Tracker. Awarded Best Actor, Un Certain Regard, at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, David Gulpilil crowns his career with a mesmerising performance as Charlie. Frustrated with the failures of the government intervention and the ‘whitefella’ laws enforced in his remote community, Charlie takes off to live the old way. But his extraordinary journey leads him full circle, and he returns to his community a wiser man. Through the heartbreaking, humorous and ultimately hopeful story of one man’s search for belonging,Charlie’s Country offers a deeply affecting portrait of contemporary Aboriginal Australia.

Brilliant - well what else would you expect from David Gulpilil and Rolf de Heer? Also humorous, poignant and deeply moving. A must-see if you are interested in Australian cinema

After seeing the shorts I can't wait to see this movie and I'm glad that it's screening beyond today (so I'll still get an opportunity to see it, my second attempt). I also recommend anyone who hasn't previously frequented one of the participating cinemas to check which day is their discount day (don't just take for granted that it's Tuesday like most other places, as I did).
