The Heavenly Life-Mahler

The Heavenly Life-Mahler

Ravel Mother Goose Suite
Tony Gould Homage to Mahler
Mahler Symphony No.4 in G major

Fabian Russell conductor
Taryn Fiebig soprano
Monash Academy Orchestra

Gustav Mahler believed that the symphony should 'take in the whole world'.

The musical and emotional world of the Fourth Symphony moves inexorably towards innocence, culminating with a soprano soloist singing a naive joyful paean to the blissful life in heaven in the final movement. There is an overarching simplicity to this work, laced throughout with exhilarating lyricism. Mahler’s inspiration for the symphony came from Das himmlische Leben (The Heavenly Life), a song he wrote in 1892 as part of Des Knahen Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn).

Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, originally written as a piano duet and later orchestrated by the composer, consists of set of pieces inspired by the fairy tales of Mother Goose. It is performed along with the world premiere of renowned Australian pianist and composer Tony Gould’s Homage to Mahler for string orchestra.
